Read some comments from teachers and principals

Schools, through their Principal, volunteer to be part of Plan-it Youth Hunter. There are 13 of 34 high schools in the Hunter region currently participating in the program, and a waiting list of interested schools.

There is a teacher in each school who coordinates Plan-it Youth and, in most developed examples, works with support from other staff such as the Careers Advisor, Welfare teacher and Year Advisor (the teacher who is a special contact person for students in a particular year at school). Teachers, mentors, the NSW DET Plan-it Youth coordinator and the local community work together to put the program in place.

It can take time to build strong school-community relationships. Many volunteers and teachers have not worked closely with each other and as they get to know each other, the bond becomes stronger and there is often a lot of laughter. Principals who plan for a longer term interest in mentoring develop strong community loyalty and many volunteers will participate in other student support programs in the school.

Plan-it Youth Hunter aims to expand to support at least one new school every year. Interested teachers can contact the Coordinator and view the Hunter Plan-it Youth NSW DET intranet site.

Plan-it Youth is a program run by the New South Wales Department of Education and Training.

I love being involved with the mentors and I’m really happy with the way the program is running. The mentors help each other a lot and between us we can do a lot for the students. The positive effects the mentoring has on the students is amazing.
