Measuring Success

Since 2002, over 1000 students have participated in Plan-it Youth Hunter (including Lake Macquarie).

Every year, more than 100 mentors have worked with at least one student. Many mentors have been with Plan-it Youth for a number of years. There is a steady increase in the number of participating schools and a steady increase in the commitment from each school.

Program evaluation currently occurs in a number of ways. Key indicators include:

  • student, teacher and parental feedback – program evaluations and focus groups;
  • tracking of student decision-making and education/training/work outcomes;
  • ongoing interest and commitment from participating schools;
  • mentor participation and retention;
  • volunteer participation in support activities and program management;
  • evidence of projects, engagement and recognition within Hunter community; and
  • separate internal evaluation is in place for program management and the effective use of resources.

It is very clear that the benefits of Hunter Plan-it Youth extend well beyond initial program objectives to support young people. There is anecdotal evidence that community mentoring is a vehicle to:

  • break down stereotypes between and within generations;
  • acknowledge and value diverse life experiences;
  • build self-esteem and re-engage mature jobseekers and other adults;
  • increase community participation from all adults (in particular, seniors seeking to ‘give back’ in a meaningful way);
  • increase community understanding about issues facing schools and young people; and
  • promote tolerance and understanding around issues of diversity.

These observations lead to the significant question: How do you measure the impact of a mentoring program? Please contact us if your organization can voluntarily support this vital aspect of program research and development.
