Mentor Training and Support

I had a great morning! ... I knew I had something to offer but I was very nervous about joining in. The people were really friendly and it was also well organised. I’m excited about being involved. Martin, mentor

Plan-it Youth Hunter organizes a range of optional ongoing opportunities for mentors to network, share ideas and learn new skills. This includes opportunities to take on other volunteer roles within Plan-it Youth mentoring. Many mentors enjoy supporting program development once they are familiar with the mentoring role and program structure.

All mentors must participate in training to join Plan-it Youth Hunter.

Mentor training

  • covers basic concepts and skills for youth mentoring, with input from mentors;
  • is largely discussion-based and assumes people will bring different opinions, life experiences and debate to the group;
  • is provided free-of-charge and without written tests and exams; and
  • includes an application process to join Plan-it Youth Hunter.

Training is usually run in partnership with TAFE Outreach at various locations around the Hunter.

It is an offence under the Child Protection ( Prohibited Employment) Act 1998 for Prohibited Persons to become involved in mentoring training and mentoring. Volunteers must be prepared to consent to all requested screening and application requirements.
