What is Mentoring?

Mentoring with Plan-it Youth is about helping young people to identify their strengths and interests.  This is a positive place to start supporting students with their questions about the future.

Mentors have life experiences that can add a new perspective for young people, plus have access to many school and community resources for specialised information.

Plan-it Youth Hunter mentors have learned to recognise mentoring as a two-way relationship: mentors learn from young people every day.

" My mentor Michael has helped me a lot with my personal development and mostly about how to stand up in front of a crowd and talk. He's helped me a lot about work - like when I start thinking about one job and it can open up lots of doors to think about other jobs." Shane, Year 9.

Overview

Plan-it Youth Hunter is a program for young people in Years 9 and 10 at school who volunteer to spend time with a mentor.

Mentors work in teams in a school - each mentor has a student, and meets that student every week at the same time as other mentors and students are meeting.  This creates a support network that includes mentors from diverse backgrounds and teachers.

Mentors spend an hour a week with a volunteer student for an agreed length of time.  This is usually a minimum of 12 weeks.   Meetings occur in school time and a mentoring celebration encourages students to reflect on their experiences and celebrate with parents, friends, mentors and teachers.

The students are often uncertain about education, training and work options and may be thinking about leaving school. Mentors bring their life experiences and provide a sounding board for ideas and challenges of school, relationships with peers and teachers, and thoughts about training and employment.

Mentor training helps prepare people for the role and is an opportunity to ask questions and hear from other mentors.
