About Us

Plan-it Youth Hunter is a mentoring program for young people in Years 9 and 10 enrolled in NSW Department of Education Schools. The students are often uncertain about education, training and work options and may be thinking about leaving school. They  volunteer to spend time with a mentor to consider their choices.

Mentors bring their life experiences and provide a sounding board for ideas and challenges of school, relationships with peers and teachers, and thoughts about training and employment.

The Plan-it Youth community both supports and learns from young people.

Plan-it Youth Hunter:

  • values young people and the life experiences of volunteer mentors;
  • encourages students in Years 9 and 10 to think about the future before leaving school;
  • creates an opportunity to build understanding between schools and communities; and
  • is a growing network of people with a positive attitude - volunteers, teachers and supporters who enjoy learning together and know they can make a difference.

You can’t mandate the things that matter. This program is clearly about the three R’s – relationships, relationships, relationships. It’s building relationships to strengthen the individual, our school, our community.

Peter Morgan, Principal, Belmont High School.

It is very clear in my mind that this program gives young people an increased sense of purpose, and they feel valued because someone will spend time with them. Once they have an employment-related goal, they often seem less ‘aimless’ – and it doesn’t matter what parents and teachers are saying, it’s not the same.

Lorraine, teacher, Warners Bay High School.

We can talk about the way this program helps bridge the differences between old and young, introduces us to people we’d never meet and even gets us back to school with teachers! The question is…how to tell people about the closeness? how to share the way we enjoy being together each week, enjoy each other’s company and what we’re all doing here together – young, old and in the middle?

Len, mentor.
